Jeans are often top-stitched in a heavier thread in a contrasting colour. When I shorten jeans, I make sure to use a top-stitching thread of a similar colour to the rest of the garment, as I did here, with these four pairs of boys' jeans I shortened for a client. There is actually a line of jeans top-stitching thread you can buy for this.
